Track 1: The Constructivist Teacher: Assimilation vs. Accommodation

Presenter: Dr. Moboluwade Christine Odunlami

Presentation Abstract

In this session, participants will engage with learning how constructivism is one of the most frequently used pedagogical frameworks in transforming nursing educators in the clinical and classroom for experiential learning. Active learning, learner-centered classroom, and collaborative learning are constructivist learning models in nursing education. The concurrence of content proficiency and a flexible teaching approach supports Piaget's (1971) manifestation of adaptability of altering previous ideas to new teaching ideas.

We will discuss practical strategies and initiatives, such as inclusive policies, diverse curriculum development, and the creation of supportive and accessible campus environments. Ultimately, this presentation serves as a call to action, urging educators and administrators to unlock the immense potential of individuals to foster innovation and contribute to a more equitable environment.

Teaching: It's NOT a Side Gig!

Presenter: Dr. Robert DeFinis

Presentation Abstract:

Teaching is a craft…an art, and like any profession there is a level of commitment to the field that should not be minimized, or assumed to be innate in your teaching staff. A shift in mindset that promotes teaching as equally, if not slightly more, important than subject area expertise will produce higher engagement, satisfaction, and professional pride while closing the door on those only interested in teaching as a “side gig.”

CAM

Presenter: Lacy Garth & Megan Graeff

Presentation Abstract

This presentation will be both informative and interactive! We want to show our fellow educators how to use CAM in the classroom so students have greater opportunity to learn alternative and holistic care through hands on activity.

Track 2: Using the Clinical Judgment Model in Simulation

Presenter: Carol Johnston

Presentation Abstract:

Have you ever wondered how to get students to do more talking during debrief? Do you wonder about what makes good questions for debriefing? Do you wish your students would reflect more on where they went wrong? Whether it is in clinical or in simulation, pulling in the NCSBN Clinical Judgement Model can help with these issues. This session will focus on methods of applying the clinical judgement model during simulation. This will also be broadly applicable to other clinical experiences. Students don’t automatically make the connection between what they do with a patient and the various parts of the clinical judgement model. By being intentional in the types of questions we ask, and the types of activities we use, we can help them apply the model to real situations and to start thinking about their thinking.
